Problems after restoring a backup

My boss' laptop got stolen, so I setup another one for him. I installed
all the programs and everything was working fine. Then once I restored
his "Application data\Microsoft" folder from the backups, his outlook no
longer loads. Everything else seems okay, but I tried un-installing
office (version 2003 BTW), then deleting "Application
data\Microsoft\office" and "Application data\Microsoft\outlook"
manually, then re-installing office, but the problem continues. the
error message is:


"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook
window. The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not
available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists."


Any suggestions?

Is the restored folder marked Read Only?

Nope.

Does he use a PST? This should be the only thing to restore if you don't
connect to an Exchange server. Make sure that this file is not marked Read
Only.

I have the PST file. And it is not write-protected. But now even if I
uninstall Office, delete all folders related to it from
$user/Application data/ and $user/Local Settings/Application Data/, when
I re-install Office, I still get the error message when loading Outlook,
even without doing the restore.

You do have to recreate the profile before opening Outlook.
