Problem with Windows XP & 2000 on the same PC, different drives?

Hello everyone:

I had a Windows XP Pro installed on the C drive in my PC. Someone told me
that I can install another hard drive and install another OS on it and they
would work together, which I did. (I needed Windows 2000 as well for testing
of our products.)

Now when 2000 is installed and running on drive D, when I start PC it shows
"Please select operating system to start" and if I select "Microsoft Windows
XP Professional" I get an error message:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

If I select "Microsoft Windows 2000" it loads up without a glitch.

Does it mean that I lost my Windows XP? Can both of thsse OS be installed on
the same machine?

Any help would be appreciated.

You might have two problems:
1. The hidden file c:\boot.ini might be incorrect. Post it in
your reply.
2. The hidden boot files c:\ntldr and c:\ntdetect.com are probably
incorrect. Replace them with the versions found in the i386
folder of your WinXP installation CD.

I don't know, I can't find those files. Tell me this, is it possible to
install Windows 2000 and Windows XP on the same machine?

Note how I wrote "hidden files". This implies that you must
instruct Explorer to show hidden and system files. If you don't
then you won't see them.

Yes, you can install both OSs on the same machine. I gave you
the recipe to make it work. If you do not understand them then
please say what is unclear.

OK, I got it now. boot file is like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

the other two files have a whole bunch of gibberish, so I can't post them
here. I don't know if they are incorrect or not?

I did not say that you should post the other two files.
Here is what I said:

Unhide these files, then use Explorer or My Computer to copy
them from the CD to the hard disk.

OK. I'll try it. Thanks.
