XP/2000 Dual Booting Problem

Hi all,

My notebook's HDD is 28GB, originally partitioned at basic
disk C. I used the Partition Magic 8.0 to create another
partition of 6GB so I can install another OS (Windows 2000
Pro). I completed this process (re-sizing the partition
and OS installation) without any errors reported.

On reboot, the "Please select the OS to start:" appears.
If I select "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional", the
computer startup normally. However, If I select my
original OS "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition", the
system stops on the next screen with the following error
message reported:

===
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
startup options for Windows 2000, press F8

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
2000 Setup using the original Setup disk or CD-Rom.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

===

With the error message, it seems that my Windows XP boot
files were damage. How can I repair this? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi;

One possible answer, Ethan.

Easiest way is to copy the Ntldr and Ntdetect.com files from the I386 folder on the Windows XP
CD-ROM to the root folder of your boot drive (usually drive C).

Make a bootable floppy, then copy the files listed above from the CD to C:\Temp. Now Restart using
the floppy.

At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line:
attrib ntdetect.com -r -s -h
attrib ntldr -r -s -h

Now copy those two files from C:\Temp to C:\ overwriting the two files that were there.

Remove the floppy and Restart.
