Problem with Windows Mail Contacts

S

Sue Manix

I recently moved from Outlook Express to Windows Mail. Previously, I would
type the first letter of an email address and I would get all of the
contacts to whom I've sent email as options for the address. Now, I seem to
only get a list of people I've emailed within the last day or two. This is
annoying (for example, when I cc myself, I seem to have to type in the
address every time). Is there a way to fix this? Thanks, Sue

For completing addresses, Windows Mail doesn't use the contacts list.
Instead, it uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages
to. This list is very hard to edit; it's easier just to send messages to
the
29 addresses you want on the list. To use the contacts list, don't type
any part of the address. Instead, click on To: or Cc: in the new message
window.

The "fix" is to use the newer Windows Live Mail.
The auto-complete and many other features work much better.

-- Sorry Sue, I don't know how to answer your problem. I have some of my
own. I would start a new thread but for some reason I can't bring up the box
to do that!

I have a larger problem which is the reason I signed up for this group in
the first place. I am switching from a computer that has Windows XP service
pack 2 on it to the new darling of Windows: Vista Home Premium. I can't move
my email addresses from Outlook Express to the Windows Mail on the Vista
computer. I have used their tutorial several times which says to export the
..wab address file to the Vista Mail. I exported the wab file onto a 1 gig
flash card and plugged it into the Vista machine. It doesn't work. I even
took the computer back to Office Depot and they couldn't figure it out. Any
ideas????
Thanks for anyones help on either issue.

Importing the .wab file from Outlook Express brings across the addresses
in your old contacts list, but not the details of your account or accounts.
It often needs to be in a directory on your hard drive and read-write,
not readonly, before you can import it.

You probably need to ask each email provider you want to connect to
(such as your internet provider) for their instructions for setting up to
use
their email servers. If they haven't written instructions for Windows
Mail yet, their instructions for Outlook Express should work under
Windows Mail as long as they don't call for the HTTP protocol. The
instructions should be available somewhere on their web server. Or,
you could tell us who your email providers are and see if anyone here
already knows where to find their instructions.

usually have to type the first 3 characters of the name, and then it only auto completes the last 29 you have used.

if you are missing the Import/ Export options at the top of the contacts, vista has lost the customization of the folder.

right clicking a blank area of the right pane of contracts , select Properties, Customize tab and use the drop down box to select Contacts. Apply, and OK out.
then you should see the IMPORT option.
