Problem with System Restore

I did a system restore on 10/29/03 restoring to 10/28/03.
It worked fine. However, I can't seem to restore to any
other date prior to 10/28/03. I've tried to restore to
10/24 and 10/26, and both times Windows said "restoration
incomplete". "system cannot be restored to (10/24 or
10/26). On 10/28,I called Dell, and spoke with 'Rocky',
who had me do a restore from about 5:10pm back to 5:05pm.
It worked. He then told me that system restore is
working, so it's not Dell's problem. Aparently it's my
problem. Can anyone help me? By the way,my computer is
a Dell Dimension 2350,and came with Windows XP installed.
When responding, please keep in mind that I am very new
at this, so I need things explained very simply. Thanks

All I can tell you is that sometimes this happens.
Checkout anything logged in the event viewer with
a source of srservice.. Perhaps there'll be extra
information. To get to the event viewer, it's
eventvwr.msc from the RUN box.

If SR gets in a knot so that the points it has made no longer chain
together back to an earlier time, those earlier points become
inaccessible. You might have been able to undo the original point and
then access an earlier one, but now the Dell guy has had his go, that
will no longer be practicable. In that case it is probably sensible to
clear it out and let it start clean. Go to Control Panel - System -
System Restore. Check 'Disable System Restore, and OK, reboot. Now
have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and delete everything in the System Volume
Information folder on each drive

Start SR up again, and I suggest reviewing the settings for each drive.
There is not much point having it enabled on data drives, and on ones
with System or Programs I would reduce the space allotted if more than
say 1GB - I use 500MB, the minimum is 200 which will only handle maybe
three or four points. But the default of 12% of a drive seems too much
for its own good on modern large drives
