Problem with SP2 - Windows\inf\biosinfo.inf missing or corrupt

After installing SP2 off a CD on my fathers ACER laptop,
when I reboot I get the following message.

Windows\inf\biosinfo.inf missing or corrupt

He has a recovery CD (not full copy of XP), which will
restore the machine to factory settings only. This is no
good as he'll lose vital documents.

Can anybody help?

The documents are "vital" but no backup exists?
