problem with PPT files. help please

for some reason my ppt files are not showing as ppt icons on mydesktop or in
my files.
when I click on them to open them it is telling me to search on the web or
from a list.
Of course I can pick powerpoint and then the files open.
But why is this happening. Everything was fine up to about 3 weeks ago.
I am running office pro 2003 on Windows Xp.

when the list is shown, there should be an option to tell your computer
"take always Powerpoint". It is named like "always take this program" - I
don't know the exact name, because I have a German Windows installed.
You can also look in your Windows Explorer and open "Tools / Folder option"
(that is the last command in the list); open "File type" (3 tab), search for
"ppt" and highlight it. Click on "change", highlight "Powerpoint" and mark
"Filetype always open with this program" (or a similar text).
