PPS download opens as PPT

P

Pedro

I have some PPS files links on my web-page. When downloaded, they open
powerpoint (2007) and display as PPT instead of the required PPS slide show.

I use Office 2007, but save the PPS files in 97-2003 format for others to
open them. I am using Vista Home Basic (laptop)

Ideas?

There is a further puzzlement. Our desktop runs XP Prof SP3, Office 2007
and also Office XP. When I click on the PPS links on our desktop, it shows
the PPS slideshow perfectly well.

Hi Pedro

This should get you started:
Control how the browser opens PowerPoint files
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00189.htm

Thanks, Lucy,

However it is not a browser issue nor a PPTX or PPSX issue - it is the 97-03
version PPS file opening in Powerpoint 2007 on Vista as if it were a PPT
file, instead of going straight to slideshow.

As I comment in a later post to this thread:

I don't know where to find it in Vista, But See if this works for you. In
Windows Explorer, Click on Tools, Folder Options, File Types, and scroll
down until you reach PPS. Select it then click on Advanced and change the
Open option to Show and set as the default.

Hi Pedro,

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I'll offer it anyway..........
I'm using PowerPoint 2002. When I start PowerPoint | FILE | OPEN, "My
Documents" opens up with my stored PowerPoint files. When I select a .pps
file it displays as a .ppt. I'm told by the highest authority ( an
MVP.............. ) that this is normal beahaviour. It occurs only when
accessing the files via PowerPoint, which seems to me what you are doing, as
you say:

"When downloaded, they open powerpoint (2007) and display as PPT instead of
the required PPS slide show."

If I open "My Documents" directly (by-passing PowerPoint) a .pps file will
display as a .pps.

I hope there's a clue somewhere in there for you.

Hi Pedro

So on your Vista/2007 box all .pps files open in edit mode? Or just ones you
download? I just want to get things really straight in my head... If it is
all .pps files then it may involve changing an entry in the registry.

Yes, Andy, that is how it should be: open a PPS file withing Powerpoint, it
opens in edit mode.

instead of the required PPS slide show."

If I open "My Documents" directly (by-passing PowerPoint) a .pps file

Yes, Andy, that is what I want to happen (though not opening PPS from Win
Explorer, but downloaded)

Still head-scratching.

Tomorrow I'll try Michael Koerner's suggestion (in this thread) .... ummmm
..... actually it is already tomorrow (00.05am).

Bed time!

Thanks for the tip, Michael. Should have thought of it myself !

I'll check it tomorrow.

(Vista is very peculiar in some ways - and/or it may be Office 2007)

Narrowing it down.

On laptop with Vista and Office 2007 and Internet Explorer as the default
browser:
Double-click the pps file in Windows Explorer, it opens as a slideshow,
which is correct.
Click on web-page link to pps file, it opens PP2007, with file as a ppt.

However: (fanfare)
If Firefox is set as the default browser, all is well.

So it is evidently MS Internet Exploder that is the problem. The shambling
twisted horrors in the programming rat-nests underneath Redmond strike
again!
