problem with kb922582

This is further to my previous posts. Basically i was given a pc that
hadn't been protected and so had had viruses. I've cleaned up the pc -
installed a firewall, sp1 and sp2 and virus checker. But when it came
windows updates it always crashed, the blue screen of doom! I'm trying
to avoid doing a clean install as I'd have to hunt down somebody to
lend me xp home disks (i've got the licence for xp).

I tried updating the pc one update at a time and it all worked ok. I
was trying to isolate the problem update. Now i've only got two update
to go: KB922582 and IE7. the first one relates to a problem that
causes a pc not to update automatcially!! Bingo (perhaps)! When I try
either of these updates the pc crashes. Are the problems related?

would appreciate any help.

Although I understand your reluctance to clean install, I think you
are making a serious error by not doing so. If I acquired a used
computer, the first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the
operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been
maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what
viruses and spyware there may be (despite what you've cleaned up,
there may be more left), etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody
else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and I
wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

Besides, one should *always* have a copy of an installation CD for the
operating system they run. You never know when you may need it

Do a clean install.
