Problem With IE6 - Windows XP Home

Steve

I started having trouble 2 days ago with IE6 on my computer with
Windows XP Home edition. The program is simply running slowly. In
addition, several times a day it seems to "hang up" and I finally get a
message that "the program is not responding". I am hoping that if I
can give enough info, someone can

Another problem that has been a nuisance but not that bad is that the
internet options "change on their own". Specifically, the dial-up
connection settings (I am using dial up only) will change to indicate
that I am connecting through a proxy server - when I am not. That has
occurred maybe 20 times in the last month (Windows XP was only
installed on October 11). I simply go in and change the settings back
to what they need to be and all is fine. But it is happening more
often. In fact, while I was typing this paragraph I opened the
connection settings to use the right term and the setting was
incorrectly specifiied as requiring a proxy server. I had "reset it"
about 10 minutes earlier.

All worked well (except for that proxy sever setting) since I got the
computer running with XP. The only 2 changes that I have made to the
system were right before the slow down started. I had set up the
content section of the internet options to prevent access to adult
sites when my niece and nephew are here. The other change was that I
had the settings on Windows so that updates were automatically
downloaded and installed. When I noticed the slow downs I "disabled"
both the content filtering and the automatic updates. However, there
was one update that took place that night, and I don't know how to tell
what that uodate was.

I tried using the Control Panel to remove and reinstall Windows
Explorer, but that did not help. I maybe should have performed that
differently?? I have also updated Spy-Bot Search and Destroy and the
AVG anti-virus and scanned the system twice, but found nothing.

What should I do now??

Thanks for any help!

Steve
