Problem with HP 3C scanner with Windows 2000

All of a sudden my HP 3C stopped working after working fine for years.

I started up the machine one day and it "found new hardware" despite it
already being there previously.

I tried to reinstall HP Deskscan 2.9 but when I try to use it or run
the test program I get:

"Sorry cannot find your scanner".
"Be sure scanner is on & properly connected (1215)"

I am using an adaptec 2940 scsi card.

The scanner does show up in the control pannel as well as during the
scsi post.

Any ideas? Hardware or software problem? TIA.

It's tough to identify any scanner issues based on a generic twain
communication message- especially scsi scanners because there's more
factors which come into the picture; but, here's a general
troubleshooting step-by-step to help isolate the point of failure...

1. confirm the scanner is Terminated
2. verify the product Identification in Device Manager as well as
within the scsi disk utility of the Adaptec card are correct( i.e. no
mispellings or symbols which would be signs of a bent/broken pin on the
cable)
3. no hardware alarms on the scanner
4. scsi ID of the Adaptec 2940 is on default 7 and scanner is on
something else( usually 6 or 5)
5. confirm aspi is at least 4.71.1 by downloading the aspi_v471.exe off
the adaptec website- | extract the compressed file to the default :
\adaptec\aspi (26files should extract) | navigate to the
C:\adaptec\aspi and run aspichk.exe..
* the files in the lower left corner of the window should list 4 files:
aspi32.sys and wnaspi32.dll should match at 4.71.1 ; the middle 2 files
should also match at v 4.60

if this isn't the case, close aspichk.exe and run the aspiinst.exe (not
the install.bat) if it completes correctly- you'll be prompted for
restart

Reboot-

then try to scan

if you get the same message- see if the scanner hardware has any
offline diagnostics which could test optics and mechanics of the
unit...

~hope it helps
