Problem with "hover" button

J

Jean-Pierre

I am quite new with FRONTPAGE. I try learning it from the "Exploring
FRONTPAGE2002" Getting started - Prentice Hall (Gretchen Marx)

I am running on W2K SP4 ~ FRONTPAGE 2002 SP3

When I try inserting a hover button, following the instructions in the manual,
everything seems to run OK in "Normal" view. The text and the link are set OK in
the dialog box. Teh button appears in the page, with the right text.

When I turn to "Preview", however, in place of the buttton, I get just a little
square with a red cross inside. No action is performed upon passing over it or
clicking on it.

I suspect some files must be missing somewhere. Should deleting and reinstalling
FRONTPAGE be a solution to the problem, but it looks like the whole "Office
suite" [ACCESS, WORD, EXCEL; OUTLOOK; FRONTPAGE] needs be removed/reinstalled
from what I can see in the "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel. Obviously I'd
avoid doing that !

Thank you for your help.

Hover buttons require Java Virtual Machine.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 and all newer versions of windows do not have JVM
installed and it must be downloaded from Sun Java.

For that reason, most people have stopped using Hover buttons.

In addition, with the latest updates, each and every Hover Button has
to be activated before it will work in a browser, unless it is
inserted into the page using JavaScript.

Thank you for the information.

I am running on WINDOWS 2000 SP4. If I remember, JVM was included in W2K, but
was deleted with one of the SP's (SP4 ?).

As much as I know, JVM can be downloaded free of charge form the JAVA site. So I
do not understand too much the issue, other than MS and SUN attempting to annoy
eachother. Am I correct or is there a real technical issue ?

Thank you for the precision.

Sorry, I do not understand what is meant by "activated" nor a "page using
JavaScript". (I know what is Java script).

I downloaded the JVM from the JAVA site, restarted the machine, re-tried to
include a hover button, saved the page before using it, etc.

Same results as before : just a little square with a red cross, and no action as
the pointer passes over it nor upon click.

The latest security updates require all active-x, Flash, and Java
objects in a page be activated by clicking on them. To get round this
you can place the objects in the page with JavaScript. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812 and
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d.../author/dhtml/overview/activating_activex.asp

How many average users know about downloading Sun Java, let alone what it is
or why they should get it?
