Problem with Fujitsu fi-5530c scanner, Scandall 21 and Kofax 4.1 -

Hello all. I recently purchased a Fujitsu FI-5530C scanner. I have
Kofax VRS Pro on order but for now am using the Kofax "standard 4.1"
that came with the scanner.

The problem is that at random times in a large document feeder job, I
get the message below and then scanner just "goes away". When I close
the application and go into device manager, the scanner does not
appear. However, when I power down the scanner, wait a few seconds and
power it up again, it reappears in device manager. At this point I can
resume scanning. I checked the event viewer but no errors appear in
system or applications.

Error: "KFX Error Code: KER_ISISCANTFIND"

Here is my configuration:

- 2.4Ghz P4 processor, 1GB memory
- Fujitsu FI-5530C scanner
- Connection is USB connected to Star-Tech PCI425USB adapter
- Windows XP Pro with latest service packs and patches
- Kofax VRS Standard 4.10.39.0
- Scandall 21 V4.3.11.0

This appears to be random but usually only occurs quite a few pages
into a job. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Bill

Hi Bill,

I may be able to help... but, I had a couple questions:

1. Does the scanner litterally drop off the bus mid-batch, or after
it's been idle for a while (i.e. after the ADF is cleared and the
operator prepares the next batch to reload the ADF chute)

2.if this occurs mid-batch, what's showing in the LCD panel of the
scanner itself? (ex. U 2 identifies the Ultrasonic Sensor detected air
pockets between 2 or more sheets and triggered whatever event you have
set for the reaction on overlap detection. To manually trigger this
event, put a sticky not in the center axis of a sheet and place it
somewhere in a batch- VRS by default will ignore detection on the
5530C; but this can easily be changed)

3. did you do the install? if so, do you recall a message saying that
you didn't have sufficient privleges even though the installation
completes okay afterwards?

Give me a call if you have some time to take a look at this pc...

Hope this helps...

Danny Ha

(btw- the upgrade to VRS professional shouldn't be on backorder since
it's an electronic upgrade. How did you purchase the upgrade? through a
Reseller, DMR, or via Kofax's website/ upgrade module within the Kofax
Directory)

One more thing: with these types of events, Event Viewer will usually
note errors referencing something like usbscan.sys.

You seem to have an good understanding of PC's but,I'd check the basics
first (after verifying the Scanner's Display upon dropping off the bus)

1. In device manager, change the view to resources by connection and
check your PCI USB Address. Make sure it's not sharing with something
like your video, NIC, etc... If it's sharing with several high-refresh
rate devices, then find another USB port (on-board if possible and on
it's own controller) remember each controller is connected to an
internal hub- you don't want to put a highspeed scanner on one port and
connect something like a printer in the port directly next to it since
it's most likely sharing the same USB controller internally. )

2. if the problem occurs again, try leaving the scanner on (only if you
don't see a flashing E in the display) and scan for hardware changes
via device manager instead.

Hope this helps~

Yes, it drops towards the end of the batch, although the timing is
pretty random. I've never seen it drop off at any time other than in
the middle of a scan job.
2.if this occurs mid-batch, what's showing in the LCD panel of the

I don't believe there was any error but I am attempting to recreate the
problem right now. Wouldn't you know it-- I've scanned about 50 pages
or so twice without the problem occurring again. I'll either post a
response or call you when I can get it to duplicate the problem again.
3. did you do the install? if so, do you recall a message saying that
you didn't have sufficient privleges even though the installation
completes okay afterwards?

Yes, I did the install. I don't remember any error messages, but I
guess it's possible.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the motherboard only has USB 1.1, which is why I put in
the StarTech USB 2.0 card. Here is the printout from Device Manager:

I'll try that. Hopefully I can get it to fail again on this batch.

I finally got it to fail again after about eight full scans. There are
five sheets left in the hopper, with the first one fed in a couple of
inches. The display on the scanner is just a "1". There are no new
messages in the event viewer.

Interesting ... sounds like a fun one.

When would be a good time to contact you to troubleshoot the issue?

you can contact me at 408-996-1829.. .but, I've got an appointment
until this afternoon if that's okay.

Thanks,

Danny Ha
