Problem to boot correctly after cloning harddrive

Lars

I have cloned and changed harddrive onWinXP Home and have problems to boot
after putting new
disk as master. I do not do this everyday and therefore I need advise.

I have done the following:

1. Cloned c-drive with Northon Ghost into new drive.
2. Switched the drives from master to slave and vice versa.
3. The new drive got the drive letter D the old drive kept C
4. Tried to boot with start alternative looking like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Boot started but stopped halfway through "grafic" process. Did not reach
login screen.

5. Added the following boot alternative:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Start"

Boot OK but machine acting strange and slow.

6. Used partition Magic to swap drive letter C > D and D>C and machine works
fine using boot as in 5 above
but do not boot using 4 above.

I also checked the disk manager which say that C is System disk and D is
System start.

I want to format D and use it as storage disc but I am reluctant before I
have come to terms with a correct boot process.

I thought of using FIXMBR in Recovery Console but I am unsure of the syntax.
Please advise!
Is it as simple as FIXMBR c: ?

Is there anything else I need to do?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Start"

when you clone a drive they are identical
thus windows can not tell them apart and gets confused!!

when you clone a drive ALWAYS restart with just one drive attached
get it working
set its drive letter (but this should not be necessary)
then turn off and put in the other drive

by this time the drives will not be identical (as windows will have written
to one) and thus no problem

Hi,
When you say you "switched the drives from master to slave" have you changed
the links on the drives and swapped the cable around. The very end cable
should be to the "C:\" drive and you should also be able to try it out using
one drive only, the new one connected to the end connector and set as
master.

which plug on the cable makes no differenc eif you set master /slave correctly
(only matters for cable select)

but windows remembers which drive it booted from last time and will still
boot from it even if its the slave.

settings in bios matter too

Thanks Patrick

I tried to disconnect the slave but then the machine did nor boot at all.
I guess that the boot part of the dis is completely corrupt.

I will have to clone again and then follow your advise.

Any more suggestions?
