I restored the emachine's xp home on one single partition of the master
drive,
I then connected the 2nd drive as slave. the bad drive originally was the
primary drive with 3 partitions: C; systems, D: other programs, a: data

when none worked except winxp I tried to boot with the following boot.ini
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="windows 2000 Pro"
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="windows 2000 Pro"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="windows 2000 Pro-does not work"

don't I need an install cd to get at the recovery console?
the Emachine's xp comes with only a recovery cd which will wipe the boot
disk and replace with the original image?

pardon me, please ignore previous post. I found I can use the winnt32.exe in
safe mode with administrator.

for some reason the two admin accounts were locked when not in safemode!

Thank you
