Problem starting "system services"

It has taken forever, but I have finally "installed" defender. But just
before it finishes, I get an error message saying there is a problem. It
says "verify that you have sufficient rights to start system services." I am
the only user on this computer and I have admin rights. I have tried the
installation several times and get the same message. I turned off my virus
scanner and "McAfee Security Center", but I still get the same message.

What makes it worse, it uninstalled the old version of windows spyware, so
now I have nothing.

Any ideas?

Have you tried going to Windows Update and checking for available updates?
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistratºr.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an adm!n.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you hªve these f!les.

Which version of Windows?

Is this a home machine, or one used in an office?

Any clues in the System events log you can see?

Are you on a large, managed network, where access to AutoUpdate is
restricted? Is there a WSUS server on the network?

Was this on Windows 2000? Nearly all instances of this issue seem to be.
When you supplied the GDI+ component needed--how did you get it into place
in the system32 subdirectory? I've seen one post suggesting that
restrictive permissions on the GDI+ dll file may create this error
message--such a condition being caused by creating the file in such a way
that it retains inherited security settings from a different location.

I am using windows 2000. It is a home computer. I am the only one using it.
When I log in, I log in as me, who is the admin. I have installed all
critical updates and even non-critical ones. I followed the instruction from
microsoft when I idown loaded and copied the GDI file (exceept, although I
downloaded to the desktop, when I unzipped it, I wasn't sure where it put the
file. So I did a search and found 3 files with the same name, each of which
was 'about the same size.' I copied one of them to where I was told.
Perhaps that is the problem?????).
