problem since last autoupdate on ibm thinkpad laptop x20

I have an ibm thinkpad laptop x20 with xpsp2 and it wouldn't retart after
last xp autoupdate.

It looks like the bios version changed. It reads PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6

I can't enter the bios and it freezes at that point.
If I choose <f1> or <f12> it says it is "entering setup..." or "preparing
boot device list..." and then, nothing.
<f11> won't boot the diagnostic partition either.

Any ideas?

Windows Update does not include BIOS updates, these are issued by your
computer manufacturer; in this case Lenovo.
I would contact Lenovo and query them about the problem, as this is a
hardware problem rather than a Windows problem, as you can't get past
your x20's BIOS.

It is unlikely that an MS autoupdate would write to your BIOS. The update
site makes some hardware device files available, but it is a voluntary
download, not automatic. If something wrote to your BIOS it is likely to be a
virus. I would seek a true copy of the bios on the web, and start over with a
clean install of windows.
