formatting IBM ThinkPad

Stephanie

Hi

I have an IBM ThinkPad laptop and my previous operating
system was Windows 2000 which I then later upgraded to Win
Xp which is now working perfect.

But now I would like to clean install Win Xp to my laptop
as well as partition the hard drive, which I don't quite
know how to do.

Before I did anything I wanted to see if I could have the
laptop boot from the CD with the Xp in it, so I went into
the BIOS setup but couldn't change it to boot it from the
CD.

Hoping someone could assist me to do a clean install of
Win Xp as well as partition my laptop.

Thank you very much

Stephanie

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

If you can't set the BIOS to boot from CD-drive (I'm sure you can, however
!) then goto to this page (link below) , scroll down to XP section, pick the
appropriate option (Pro/Home with or without SP1).
You will then be taken to a Microsoft page where you can download a utility
that will construct a set of 6 boot-floppys. These can be used to start the
XP install and after a while will require the XP-CD.
