Problem: sereral users, one computer, vista home premium

Hi.

I don't use Vista, but my brother does, and there are several users
configured in his Pc.

My brother does a lot of audio and video processing, and his works some
times take hours to process, also he does delayed downloads on the net.
Here is the issue, my brother wants to leave his Pc while his working is
processing, his mail client is checking mail every 10 in 10min, his IM
online receiving messages, his downloads running, whatever... and lock his
desktop.
When his kid goes to the computer to play a game or talk on msn, my brother
wants that the kid starts he's own acount and he's own desktop, but by
doing that, all of my brother programs cease to work and that is not
aceptable, all he's work becames stuck and he doesn't ear if anyone is
calling him in the IM.

My brother has seen the way i work with my computer and now he wants to do
the same with his... i've been trying to put his system working like mine
but can't do it... looks like Vista can not run 2 users at once.

Question: Can Vista run 2 desktops of 2 diferent users at once, having one
on screen and the other invisible but running, and be able to switch betwen
users without closing none of the opened sessions?

If this can be done in Vista, please tell me how...

Many thanks

Vista can easily do this.

Create a new user. If you need help with this, check out the guide below.
http://www.maximumpcguides.com/create-a-new-user-in-windows-vista/

After you created a new user, all your brother has to do is switch users by
clicking the Start button, point at the arrow (pointing right) next to the
lock button and select switch user. After that your brother will remain
logged in and someone else can log in at the same time using a different
account.

There is allready enough users created.

i know that button, we've been trying it

After that your brother will remain
logged in and someone else can log in at the same time using a different
account.
Are you sure about this?
because that's what we've been trying and doesn't work.
in one of the tests we made, we left a delayed process running at 10%,
change to 2º user and after 1 hour (aprox) we got back to the 1º user and
the process was showing 10% still.
looks like the 1º session goes into a kind of hibernation mode whem starting
a 2º session. that is not what is needed.

Thanks

What OS are you running that allows two users to log on and utilize CPU time
simultaneously? (I could guess... but I'd rather have you disclose it.)

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess your observation that the non-active
acct stops processing in Vista is correct.

Don't need to guess... just check my headers, my "toy OS" is identified
there.

No one can accuse me of -ever- referring to -any- nix distro as a "Toy OS."
Never have, never will.

And my guess is just that; a guess. Probably a correct guess, but I'd not
settle on a guess. Sorry, but I haven't found a definitive answer to your
question.
