Problem sending email in Outlook 2007

I get the follwoing error when trying to send email:

Task '(e-mail address removed) - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If
you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'

The email account is set up as a POP3 account in Outlook 2007. My ISP
claims that there is nothing wrong at their end. I have uninstalled my anti
virus software and firewall. What else can I try? How can I tell if
somthing is blocking Port 25 on my PC?

See if increasing the server timeout in the properties for that email
account helps.

Thanks Bill,

I increased it up to 4 mins and it didn't make any difference. FYI I have
double checked my ISP - I tried telnet to their mail server from a virtual XP
PC running on my Vista PC and it connected with no problem. When I try and
telnet to port 25 on any server from my Vista PC, telnet just hangs and
eventually time out.

Same for me....changing port from 25 to 587 worked fine.
The problem is ...WHY???

Why did my ISP..in this case BTinternet do this without any warning?
Also for those not geeky enough or capable enough to pursue the problem thro' to its end, how on earth are they meant to cope??

I searched their website/sites from top to bottom and all links and there wasn't a single mention of this happening or about to happen!!
The strange thing is, my partner here at home uses an e-mail address as one of the five that BT issued us with on my account and her laptop still sends and receives fine on the original ports..
Oh well.....they put the twisted wires in and told us 5 years ago they couldn't shove more than 56k down them!!

If you are a home user, tt's not BT Internet that did it, it was Yahoo,
since BT contracts with Yahoo to supply mail services. Moreover, you should
have receive notice from BT. SBC (AT&T) also uses Yahoo for home mail
services and I was notified not only by two specific email messages two and
then one month before, I was also notified in the monthly Up2Speed
newsletter they send. On top of that, ST&T supplied a tool I could install
which would access the account settings in bot Outlook and Outlook Express
and make the change automatically (although I didn't use it).
Also for those not geeky enough or capable enough to pursue the
problem thro' to its end, how on earth are they meant to cope??

It is a spam reduction and security enhancement measure.

Thanks for the excellent thread. Solved my problem. I would have never
guessed port 587 is better than port 25

I made that change on two of my users who are getting the same problem and it
didn't help.

They are running Outlook 2007 on XP boxes with Symantect Corporate Edition
10. This problem did not start happening until Office '07 was installed.
