Problem Scanning

Hi,
I'm having problems getting my scanner to work, the icon for the scanner
(Umax Astra 3450, USB) used to appear in My Computer when I connected it but
doesn't anymore. I also tried to open Scanners and Cameras in the Control
Panel but it won't open at all. I suspect this problem has to do with the
fact that I recently upgraded to Windows XP SP2 and I believe this is the
first time I've tried to scan since then.

Any help with this problem is appreciated. Thanks!

The Scanner may need to be re-enumerated (detected).

Unplug the USB connector from the scanner.
Click Start, Run (Type) devmgmt.msc [Press Enter]
Click View (from text options), Click Show Hidden Devices
Click the [+] besides Imaging Devices
From the expanded list look for an instance of your scanner
(It will appear light gray, indicates known to system, but not
currently connected/available)
Right Click the listing, and from the context menu choose the
option Uninstall.
Repeat if more than one instance of the scanner appears in the
listing.
Close the Device Manager console & re-insert USB cable.

When I unplug the USB connector from the scanner, there is no Imaging Devices
listed there. Only when the scanner is connected does Imaging Devices appear.

The scanner name never appears in light gray, either.

Without checking "Show Hidden Devices", the category won't
appear in the listing.

Yes, I did exactly as you said and the category Imaging Devices doesn't
appear. I made sure I checked "Show Hidden Devices".

Hi Norma,
I have the same scanner and had problems when changing to Windows XP.
Do you mean you have just upgraded to XP or did it work on XP until you
installed SP2?
Your scanner will not be recognised by XP. Consequently, UMAX offer a large
download which include new drivers and the Vistascan software (although they
are both designed for Windows 2000, Umax say they're the right ones to
install). The file size is 66mb so you'll probably need a broadband
connection.
The link on the Umax website is hard to find, and I had to e-mail Umax.
However, they replied within 24 hours with the link and it installed a
treat. Sorry I can't find it now for you.
Windows XP then recognised it fine.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Chrisssss

I looked at the Umax website and it said I had to purchase the
drivers/software. Did you have to buy it? I'll try e-mailing Umax later.

It worked find in Windows XP but didn't work once I upgraded to SP2. When I
upgraded from Windows ME to XP everything was fine, too. This is the first
time I'm having problems.
