Problem saving 2003 template in 2007 version

Guest

I have noticed a problem saving a 2003 template from the new 2007 version.
This option is possible, but when opening the 2003 template in 2003 version.
And viewing the master slides. The title slide layout has changed! Has anyone
noticed this error.

G

Thank you for your response. The title slide seems ok when you open the
presentation in the 2003 version. But if you take a view at the master it´s
not the same. The autolayout text boxes in the master has the default 2007
settings. And not the formatted choosen proportions saved within the 2007
version. Again. I have tried several times to save the template in 2007 as a
1997-2003 template. And i get the same error every time.

Well, I'm seeing some odd behavior, but I'm not sure it's the same as what
you're seeing.

I opened a new, blank presentation in PPT 2007 and applied the Metro design
theme. Then I used File | Save As and saved as a POT file. (97-2003
template)

In PPT 2003, I opened the POT file and went to View | Master | Slide Master
to see what the title master looks like. And I discovered I don't actually
*have* a title master. So I used Insert | New Title Master, and yes, it
shifts the text placeholders to something more in line with where the 2003
title master placeholders are (in the middle of the slide, with the subtitle
placeholder just below it).

I suspect this is just due to the differences in how text placeholders are
handled in 2007 coupled with the differences in how masters are handled
(Master + collateral slide layouts in PPT 2007 vs simply multiple masters in
PPT 2003).

Thanks for the answers, but this does not solve the problem. I am having the
same issues. Here's what I do:

Create a presentation in 2007 but save it as a 2003 presentation (for the
client who does not have 2003). They open the presentation and all of the
title slides are "messed up" The place holders for the title slides have now
become Bulleted List slide place holders but it still has the background
graphics of the original title slide remain the same. The only fix I have
found is to re-apply the slide design while in the 2003 version of
powerpoint. However, this is not a "good" fix.

Is there any way to control which masters are saved with the presentation
(when saved as a 2003 rather than a 2007 presentation)? I've tried
re-arranging the masters, but that did not work either. It is quite
troublesome for our clients that work on presentations back and forth using
different versions of Powerpoint.

Thanks for your help!

You are right -- this is an issue.

I would suggest that you keep a copy of both 2003 and 2007 installed on your
machine. You can install both as long as you install 2003 before 2007 -- and
try not to have them running together.

And for any critical work such as something for a client still using 2003 or
older versions, clean up everything in 2003.

Sorry to not provide you with a better answer!

You should not create a template in one version and use it as a template in
the other version.

But as long as only finished presentations are transferred and altered, I
have seen only minor problems. And usually not big issues with slide
backgrounds. If you like, you may send me a small sample of both your 2007
and 2003 presentations. (Change ".ed" to ".de" in my reply address.)

Best regards,
Ute

Thanks for the reply. I wish that were the case. But it seems that if you
open a 2007 presentation in 2003, the title masters are altered (the text
boxes are no longer text boxes of a title slide, but of a bulleted list
slide). i'll put together a few examples and send them to you.

FYI...this is what I've done to test this issue:
1. Create a presentation in 2007, save as 2003
2. Open that presentation in 2003
3. Added a new title slide
4. Title slide is no longer in the correct format.
5. Solution: Fix Tile Master in 2003 and re-apply to all title slides

Test 2:
1. Create a presentation in 2003
2. Open presentation in 2007
3. Change the spelling of one word
4. Save presentation (2003) format
5. Open presentation in 2003.
6. Title slides are now incorrect (wrong text placeholders)
7. Re-apply Slide design template and re-apply title layout to every title
slide.

If you have access to both versions of Pwrpt, give those steps a try and see
if you come out with the same results. If not, I'll send you what I have.

Thanks again for taking time to answer...

Hello everybody.

Thank you for this interesting discussion.
the same problems exists with 2007 version templates, even if you use the
compatibility pack.
We are facing the same problem in my company, people being equipped with
either 2003 or 2007 templates.
We have on each computer the clean template, developped with the local
version.
but it still painful : when a person creates a presentation in 2007, send it
to a colleague with 2003 version, that wants to add a title slide, it is
impossible.

The only "solution" is to reapply a default template to the presentation
before adding new slides. but I don't consider it as a "clean solution"

Is there a way to ask Microsoft to fix it's compatibility pack ??

Thanks

See my answer to your other question: The concept of Layouts, Masters,
Templates and Designs has changed in PowerPoint 2007. Use the appropriate
version to create templates and designs.

Best regards,
Ute

Dear Michael,

I am wondering if you found a solution to this problem.
We are also experiencing this issue in our studio in London and would very
much like to find a resolution.

Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Lyndon

Thanks for your response again. Your discription of the problem matches
my
experience almost perfectly. I tried opening a thoroughly tested and
functional 2003 ppt in 2007. Again I saved it as a 1997-2003 pot in the
2007
version.

When opening the pot in 2003 in View - Master - Slide Master I have a
different experience. Both Title Slide and Slide Master are visible. The
graphics are intact but the placeholders are centred like the default.
Meaning that the feature of saving a 1997-2003 pot in the 2007 version
does
not actually function.

I am specialized in designing PowerPoint templates and presentation
material
within my small company Symbolik PowerPoint Solutions in Copenhagen. Im
very
thankful for you checking up on the problem. Thank you again.

Well, I'm seeing some odd behavior, but I'm not sure it's the same as
what
you're seeing.

I opened a new, blank presentation in PPT 2007 and applied the Metro
design
theme. Then I used File | Save As and saved as a POT file. (97-2003
template)

In PPT 2003, I opened the POT file and went to View | Master | Slide
Master
to see what the title master looks like. And I discovered I don't
actually
*have* a title master. So I used Insert | New Title Master, and yes, it
shifts the text placeholders to something more in line with where the
2003
title master placeholders are (in the middle of the slide, with the
subtitle
placeholder just below it).

I suspect this is just due to the differences in how text placeholders
are
handled in 2007 coupled with the differences in how masters are handled
(Master + collateral slide layouts in PPT 2007 vs simply multiple
masters in
PPT 2003).

Thank you for your response. The title slide seems ok when you open
the
presentation in the 2003 version. But if you take a view at the
master
it´s
not the same. The autolayout text boxes in the master has the default
2007
settings. And not the formatted choosen proportions saved within the
2007
version. Again. I have tried several times to save the template in
2007 as
a
1997-2003 template. And i get the same error every time.

I have noticed a problem saving a 2003 template from the new 2007
version.
This option is possible, but when opening the 2003 template in
2003
version.
And viewing the master slides. The title slide layout has changed!
Has
anyone
noticed this error.
