Problem Opening Outlook 2002

Gordon Padwick

When my beta copy of Office 2003 expired a couple of days ago I removed it
and reinstalled Office XP. All XP applications except Outlook 2002 seem to
work OK. When I try to start Outlook 2002 I get the error message "The
dynamic link library MAPIR.dll could not be found in the specified path..."
When I click OK on that, I get the error message "Cannot start Microsoft
Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version."

I don't have MAPIR.dll anywhere on my disk. My version of MAPI32.DLL is
dated 7/20/2000.

Any ideas about how I can get Outlook 2002 to run again? I had been using it
previously, before I installed the Office 2003 beta. I suspect a registry
problem, but don't want to fiddle with the registry without knowing exactly
what I'm doing.

Jocelyn:
Unfortunately, the KB article you refer to doesn't help. That article deals
with how to correct a profile problem in Outlook 2002. You need Outlook
running before you can do what that article suggests. My problem is that I
can't get Outlook 2002 running!

Perhaps you could reread my original question and make another suggestion.

You don't need Outlook running to create a new profile. You can do it
through Control Panel | Mail (or Control Panel | User Accounts | Mail if you
are using the Category view in Control Panel). I realize you're not using
Outlook 2002 but the problem you describe sounds similar to the one in the
MSKB article, and when it comes to Outlook (any version), sometimes a new
profile cures many ills.
