Problem launching Word by clicking on a file in a remote folder

I have had many problems since running a registry "cleaner" and installing
SP3. I have posted several of these and responses have been helppful, but
one serious problem remains. I have been keeping the files I am currently
working with on a remote computer and have arranged for them to be accessed
as Offline files. This all worked perfectly before -- I double clicked on
the file name in the Offline list and worked on them for a while and then
synchronized the offline folder. But now I can't do that any more. When I
click on the offline file nothing at all happens (except the hourglass comes
up) for about 10-15 minutes. Then eventually I see the file in Word but have
to wait another 5-10 minutes before it responds to keystrokes. The same
happens when I close down the window -- nothing happens for another 10 or 20
minutes. The top border of Word windows says that Word is not responding
although if I wait long enough it eventually does. The wait can be as long
as 20 minutes which makes the strategy of working off line useless. I would
appreciate any help I can get as this has distrupted my work schedule.

I hope you had taken a "registry backup" prior to running any registry
"destroyer" (opps: cleaner.) Most registry cleaners can / will break
most registries.

I did not back up my registry -- I bought the Registry program to "clean" my
registry and after I ran it many things were not the same. One program (HP
All in one) would not work. AFter muich consulting it turned out that the HP
software set an invalid registry entry (one that pointed to a non-existant
folder. So RegCure did what it was supposed to do -- it deleted that entry
so the software would no longer run. Many of the other problems created by
the registry cleaner eventually got fixed by my rebooting the system many
times. Maybe that will fix the current problem?

BTW The problem occurs not only when I load a word document from the Offline
Files folder, but also when I open a laptop folder from my desktop and then
click on a DOC file. There is something seriously wrong with how Word
accesses remote folders. If I copy the file over (using Windows Explorer) I
can open it fine, but when I double click on it I have to wait 5-20 minutes
during which nothing can happen (including running Task Manager).
