Problem installing WXP, seems like a hard drive problem, Need help please

Hi all,
I have just built a new computer.
MB- ASUS P4P800Deluxe
Intel P4 2.4 800
HD- WesternDigital 120gb EIDE 8mb cache 7200rpm
etc..

I have put together the computer boot it up and went
through the BIOS setup, and everything was fine. But when
I try to install WXP pro using the installation cd it
gave me the following error after "windows is now
starting" after loading all the drivers.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut
down to prvent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this scren appears
again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your compute. Remove and newly
installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check
your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured
and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive
corruption, and then restart your computer.

Techincal information:

***STOP: 0x0000007B
(0xF79B663C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

"

I formatted my hard drive to NTFS using the utility that
was provided by Western Digital, and all I can find out
about this error is that my hard drive is not formatted
or something. So I am stuck here not sure what I have to
do to get over this problem. I read somewhere that it
might be because the Windows is not detecting the IDE
controller, would that be the cause of this problem? I am
going to try to get in touch with ASUS to find out but if
you have any suggestion, please help.

Thank you,
Arnold Oh

Can you try to unformat it from the WD format, use a Windows 98 boot disk to delete the partition. Then allow XP to set up the NTFS itself during the install.

Well, that was the first thing I did. Installing windows
with untouched hard drive, but got the same error. I also
tried using fdisk, but that didn't work and I didn't have
the right version of format....

Thank you,

You did try to boot from the XP CD? Didn't it start the set up routine?

Is the drive jumpered correcty? I am sure it is, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Yeah, I am booting from the XP CD. I get this error
message after it goes through the routine where it calls
up the drivers to use from the cd. More specifically, it
lists all the drivers being called on the bottom of the
screen, then says "now starting Windows" then I get this
error.

The current jumpers in the hard drive is set to auto
select by the mb. It was on master earlier and I got the
same problem and Western Digital recommend that I set it
to auto. I don't think the jumper coudld be the problem
cause when I goto the BIOS my hard drive is detected as
the primary master w/ right size and settings.

Yeah, this is really weird, thanks for the help.

Arnold, I cann't find that MB listed on the ASUS site (http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/overview_p4.htm) I was looking to see if you needed to install a controler card driver of any sort, the 1st line on the bottom of the setup screen.

IDE RAID do you need to install a driver for it? Might have to to get the IDE recognized.

"The VIA IDE-RAID controller supports two-channel ATA 133, enabling users to build Maximum 4 ATA-133 hard disk as an RAID0, 1 , 0+1 , JBOD array. And the graphical user interface provides an easy way to configure and manage disk drives or disk arrays connected." - from the page.

"Press "F?" if you need to install a 3rd party RAID driver." is the 1st line that shows up on the bottom of the install screen. Have you tried?

I just tried that, but didn't work. Your suggestion gave
me an idea and I tried to dl all the drivers I can from
ASUS and Intel to see if it would work (Using f6 during
WXP installation) but none of that worked..... Yeah, this
is nice MB except that for some reason I can't get WXP on
it..... X( ...... Oh yeah I tried calling Microsoft, they
put me on hold for 15 min, someone answers, take me CD
key and then put me on hold for 45min. Which I then
proceeded to hang up and start swearing....
errr.......... On the website it says that I can get free
support regarding installation but when I go through the
steps it tells me that I need to pay $30. ??? Am I
missing something?? cries...X(
Thanks,
Arnold Oh

ModelName=P4P800%20Deluxe iaa35r.zip looks promising.
Looks like a very nice MB. Here I sit with a PIII 933
on my ASUS TUSL2C. I'd like to upgrade but $$$$ are
holding me back. :-{

Arnold, do you have Windows 98, NT or 2000? Try installing one of those then do an updgrade?

Have you checked with the IT department there at Carnegie Mellon? Just maybe they might have an idea.
