Problem Installing q818529.exe

OS: Win98 SE
Browser: 6.02800.1106

I've been getting frequent kernell32.dll errors. I also have gotten
mshtml.dll error. For the second one, I tried installing q818529.exe and got
an error message that "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service
Pack 1 to be installed. That's just what I have, but the file versions are
older than this update. When I run Windows Update, no updates are available.

If q818529 applies to Win 98 SE and my IE SP 1 file versions are older than
the update, why won't it install?

X-post to Win98 General.

818529 (AKA MS03-020) is a /Cumulative/ Patch (read: update) for IE. The
error is MS's foggy way of saying you have a newer Cumulative Update (e.g.,
MS05-052) installed which supersedes (replaces) 818529. (You're up-to-date
at Windows Update, right?)

Translation: 818529 is not the fix for your problem.

1. You may need new video drivers. Check the website of your video board or
computer manufacturer. Meanwhile, you can do the following:

- Use the default mouse pointers.

- Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.

- Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (Start | Settings |
Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will see
little, if any, performance degradation.

- Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If any of these make the problem go away, you need new video drivers.

2. The problem may be caused by hijackware.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
