Problem copying folders from Windows Explorer to a flash drive

E

ECLiPSE 2002

I am running Win XP SP3 and attempted to copy my geneology folders and
files to a flash drive. I was able to copy some folders and subfolders
and the files therein others would not copy. Each time I dragged and
dropped these folders I got and "error copying folder or file"message
that says "cannot copy file."

Anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening? Would appreciate
any inut or suggestions.

Are those files set as protected files

You need to change "ownership" of those files. Just do a search on how it's
done. As it was changed somewhat between xp and windows 7.

Perhaps you need to check whether there is enough room on the flash
drive. Also, make sure the files and folders comply with the file
naming convention including avoid very very very very long file names or
very deep folder hierarchy.

If the above is all met, then try copying the files/folders on a new
flash drive that has absolutely nothing on it. You can ensure this by
formatting the old flash drive so that the files are deleted from the
File Allocation Table.

Ps: because you have cross-posted, I have removed one newsgroup from my
posting.

Correction, I did not notice the underscore between help_and_support,
which, by the rules of naming, is not permitted. But, Microshaft plays by
their own rules.

Many thanks to all responders. I did not intend to start a food fight
guys!!

I have since played around with the copying process in Windows
Explorer and was able to open folders and drag and drop individual
files within the folders successfully. One folder and its subfolders,
however, continues to resist copying.

It is a folder that I created within my geneology directory so I
douybt if it is protected in any way, but could be wrong. I'm not even
sure how one protects a file/

The flash drive is only 1/3 full.

I created the files within the resistant folder and to the best of my
knowledge they all comply with proper naming conventions.

So far still unable to drag and drop several folders and files

How many files and folders are in the "root" of the flash drive...that
is, not in another folder or sub-folder?

No richard, ownership doesn't apply because chances are the flash drive
are going to be formated with FAT file system and ownership only applies
to NTFS.
