Problem Adding a Domain Controller

D

Don

In preparation for work on our current primary domain controller, I am
trying to add a second (temporary) domain controller to our lab network.
(It is a stand alone network with about 12 workstations.) I have installed
Win2000 Server on the second machine (Enterprise - as in the ship) and have
it on the network (LabNet) with the existing domain controller (Pulsar).

Based on what I have read, I am using the AD Wizard to add Enterprise as an
additional DC on LabNet. So the process is going something like this:

1) Add as additional DC on network
2) Username and password of account - using the network admin account
3) Select domain name -- LabNet
4) Select directory for domain database and log files -- accepting default
5) Shared System Volume Location -- accepting default
6) Directory Services Restore Mode Password -- check v----
7) Summary screen
8) Data transfer screen
9 WHAM!
Window titled "NEW CREDENTIALS"
The operation failed because: Failed to modify the necessary properties for
the machine account ENTERPRISE $
"Access is denied"

Type username and password of account with sufficient privileges to create
an additional domain controller for the LABNET.local domain.

The administrator account I am using is in the domain and enterprise groups
on the existing DC.

Would someone kindly point me in the right direction?!

Thanks!!

Well, I think I found the source of the problem. At least after I changed
the setting, the AD Wizard worked (for adding an additional DC in the
domain).

On the primary DC (Pulsar) I looked at the properties for Enterprise. I
noticed the "Trust Computer for Delegation" block was not check (it was
checked for Pulsar). Since it made sense that Enterprise would have to be a
trusted computer, I checked the block. Ran the AD Wizard and it went all
the way through. Success!

Hope this tid-bit helps someone in a similar situation!
