Windows 2000 Domain Controller

I have had a Domain controller (only one on network) crash. The "SYSVOL" file
has been corrupted. I am trying to save the remainder of the settings by
promoting another member server to domain controller, but if I try to add an
additional DC, it can not find the domain or active directory, if I try to
add a new DC, it said that that domain already exists. Any suggestions on how
this can be done with out having to recreate all the settings on the new DC?

In order to promote a member server to a DC it MUST contact the first DC.

Promoting it without it contacting the original DC of the domain will create
a new domain. Even if you name the domain the same the SAM is different
because the promoted DC created a NEW SAM. It did not replicate the SAM from
the original DC.

New SAM = NEW domain as far as the clients are concerned.

Not going to work. You needed to have the second DC up and replicating with
the first in order to "save" any parts of the domain. That is the major
reason to have a second DC on the domain. It will hold the domain/user info
in case the first fails. A member server will not.

You would be better off restoring from a backup before the corruption.

You only have one DC so far? I hope you backed up the system and you can
perform a authoritative restore
