Problem Accessing External Drive from LAN

J

Jim

I'm running 3 Windows Pro computers (A, B, & C) on a LAN. Computer C has an
external H drive on it with Share enabled.

All computers can access the H drive except computer B (it says you might
not have permissions).

TIA

Is Simple Sharing enabled or disabled on all three machines? Look in
Folder Options>View. You need to make the settings identical on all
three machines. If you leave Simple Sharing enabled, the computers
authenticate across the lan as Guest. If you disable Simple Sharing,
create identical user accounts and passwords on all three machines (my
preference for security reasons but only you know what is appropriate
in your situation).

Then you've got something else set up wrong and since I can't see your
computers and you've provided almost no information about your
networking setup and the external drive, that's about all I can tell
you.

Is the external drive a NAS? If yes, it is running its own operating
system (usually a flavor of Linux). Go through the setup for it and
check the permissions. If it's just a regular external hard drive
connected via usb or firewire to a local machine, check its Sharing &
Security Properties. Add Everyone to the list. You may need to disable
Simple Sharing to get to this function; all my XP Pro boxen have Simple
Sharing disabled so I can't check for you.

I'm running a hard wired LAN with a router and high speed cable modem. File
sharing and Remote Desktop work between all computers (except as noted
between computer B and the H drive on computer C). The external H drive
attached to the C computer is just a standard disk drive used for additional
file storage.

The error message when computer B tries to access the remote H drive is as
follows:
"You might not have permissions and/or not enough sever storage available to
process the command"

I understand this problem (not enough sever storage) might be associated
with Norton Antivirus (which I'm running). I've set IRPStackSize to 21 in
the Windows Registry as suggested by some posts but I still have the
problem.

Try setting the IRPStackSize to 25.

Problem solved - I turned off "Quota Management" on the external drive and
now I can access this drive from computer C. Don't understand it but it
appears to work.

Thanks for your help Malke.

I never would have thought about checking for quotas, but certainly
setting a quota on the drive would cause your problems. I'm glad you
got this sorted and thanks for taking the time to post the solution.
