Private Files

On a small home workgroup of XP Pro & Home systems, using a 4 node hub, a "grayed out" check in the 'Make this folder private' check box is preventing me (the administrator) from unchecking the box. I beleive it is preventing me from allowing some files to be copied between members of the workgroup. How do I remove the check from that box?

Hi, Does the folder belong to your user account?
You may also want to check the following:
-Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
-Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative
Tools, expand Services and Applications, and then double-
click Services.
-Right-click the Server service, and then click Start.

What is the sharing status of the folder?

Hi, Yes you're right in thinking that the administrator
should be able to check the box but sometimes a
configuration problem could alter this. You may find
these KB Articles useful. There reference numbers
are:304040 and 307874,just enter this in the KB search at
www.microsoft.com/support.
Let me know how you get on, Luke.

I'll have to check the account, but shouldn't the
administrative account be able to change the 'mark as
private' selection? Also, checking your later
recommendation - thanks...

Have you found a solution? I am having the same problem and am ready to wipe the hard drive and restore to factory settings.

Here is what I posted yesterday under XP configuration. No replies yet. I'm getting the sinking feeling this is an XP bug.

I am using XP Home edition running on an unmodified Dell Dimension (about 1 year old). I mistakenly set my Documents and Settings Folder (DS) to Private and I can not figure out how to undo this.

I used the User control panel to create a password for my account. A dialog appeared asking if I would like to make my documents private. I mistakenly answered yes. This has destroyed my home network, I can not see my files from another computer. If I right click on my DS folder and select the Sharing option it shows "Make this folder private" checkbox as checked. However it is greyed out, I can not uncheck it. I also can't uncheck the "Share this folder" checkbox, or change the Share name. I can check, and uncheck the "Allow network users to change my files" box, but checking this box does not restore my ability to access my files.

Please help. Neither Dell and Microsoft will help without some $$.
