Access Denied for some folders on one computer in network

Can anyone tell me why I am not able to access some folders while others I
can on a XP Home box in my workgroup? I can't seem to find a way to open
permissions on these folders. All other nodes run XP Pro. Connectivity is
fine (except for the slow network browse on the same computer - posted about
this previously). I can SEE all the folders, but can only access some and
not others.

Thanks, ARL

What are the names of the folders that you can't access?

By default, Windows XP blocks networked access to Program Files,
Windows, and to individual users' folders within Documents and
Settings.

By default, Windows XP doesn't let you configure permissions on shared
folders.

In XP Pro, you can remove those limitations by disabling simple file
sharing:

1. Open My Computer and click Tools > Folder Options > View.
2. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
3. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".

In XP Home, there's no supported way to disable simple file sharing or
remove the limitations. You can start XP Home in "Safe Mode with
Networking", which temporarily disables simple file sharing, but that
method isn't documented or supported by Microsoft, and I can't
guarantee that it will work. If you try it, at your own risk, back up
your data and make a restore point first in case something goes wrong.

The folders you named are EXACTLY the ones I can't access! You really know
what you're doing there Steve!

So the solution is to upgrade to XP Pro? Or is there a
(unsupported/undocumented) back door to file permissions or disabling simple
file sharing within XP Home?

In XP Home, there's no supported way to disable simple file sharing or
remove the limitations.

One back door is to start XP Home in "Safe Mode with Networking",
which will let you share those folders an set permissions on them and
other shared folders.

Here are some other possibilities:

1. Use the CACLS command, as described here:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web/msg/6faf782867cba46f

2. Follow the procedure shown here:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm

All of these methods have been recommended to me by people who I
trust. However, I can't personally guarantee that they work, and I
recommend making a backup and a restore point before trying them.

The only supported way to remove the limitations is to upgrade to XP
Pro.
