Printing failure-Requires Reboot to print...

My XP Pro workstation is connected to my Server 2003 domain. I have 3
network printers. Recently when I send something to any or all of the
printers from ANY application it shows up in the print queue but does not
print to any of the printers. Restarting the printjob from "Printers and
Faxes" has no effect. Here's the weird part, as soon as I reboot and then log
in, then the print requests will immediately start printing...

I checked the print spooler service and stoped and then restarted it.
Sometimes that will do the trick, but usually only after i quit the
application that I was printing from. This does not always work reliably and
is becoming a pain in the ...

The only change that I can remember and associate with the chnaged printing
behavior may have been when I installed a new HP Laserjet 5100 dtn printer
driver on the XP workstation.

This is starting to really drive me nuts, any suggestions?

It was suggested to me by experts. Try this:-
1. My Computer/Properties/Device Manager.
2.Click the (+) sign to the left of Universal Bus Controllers.
3. Right click the device listed under Universal Bus Controller and select
Uninstall.
4. Click OK. Repeat until all the devices under Universal Bus Controller are
removed.
5. Shut down computer (NOT RESTART)

That Laserjet may be a model designed before XP.

(On that XP machine) Press winkey-break(or start/run 'sysdm.cpl') ,/Hardware
tab Open the Device manager and click the + sign next to Ports(COM & LPT).
select the printer port, e.g. ECP Printer Port (LPT1). Port Settings tab,
check the 'Enable legacy Plug and Play detection'. Restart.

There were 17 entries, I was only able to uninstall about 6 then the
uninstall process would hang....

I then shut down and restarted. Generally it will print fine after a
reboot, it's when it runs for a while that the problem kicks in. It printed
last night and is now not printing again...

That has no effect. I've been in contact witrh HP tech support and have
tried a zillion things to no effect either. I'm pulling my hair out with
this one. I'm afraid I'm looking at a bare-metal rebuild. I wanted to wait
for the Vista SP1 and then upgrade in that direction as I have the hardware
to run it, but that is at least 6 months out now... so I remain in a
quandry...
