Printer - "USB Device Not Recognized" problems

Hi, I'm having a problem with a printer connected via USB to PC w/ Windows XP
PRO sp2. The printer will work fine until I turnoff or restart the PC.
After restarting the PC, Then I get a message "USB Device Not Recognized".
Eventually after numerous times of turning off & restarting the PC , the
message "New Hardware found" pops up and the printer works fine until the
next restart or poweroff. And the problem starts over again.

I know this is not much information to go on, but I am at a loss as to how
to troubleshoot this and any suggestions will be appreciated.

Is this a newly installed printer or is this a recent issue to an otherwise
printer that worked fine for some time? Do you have the "Safe Hardware Removal"
icon in the notification area? If you do, what happens if you remove the
printer before shutting down/re-booting?

Please provide the exact Make/Model of the printer.

Had that with a device that was working for 2 months and then wouldn't
init when Windows started. Didn't help to uninstall the device and
rescan in Device Manager, either. It came up as "unknown device" until
I unplugged and replugged the device after Windows had started and I was
already logged in. So trying to issue a software reset on the device
and get its parameters did not work until it was physically reinserted
(which meant it lost power so it was probably a config issue inside the
device that was corrupted until cleared by a power reset). The
replacement device worked just fine. Time to contact your printer
vendor regarding warranty replacement.

Hi, the printer is a Canon PIXMA MX310. I know it is not the printer as we
switched out a HP Photosmart printer having the same problems and replaced it
with the Canon.
No, I don't see the Safe Hardware Removal icon. As I said, the problem
seems to be random or occassionally, like the PC doesn't recognize that
something is plugged into the USB. I've tried various USB devices on the PC
all with the same results. Only after restarting the PC, then I may get the
popup message that new hardware has been found, then the printer works fine
until the next shutdown.

What other USB devices do you have installed / connected? It seems
that the USB ports can not provide enough power over the USB ports.
XP would then start disconnecting devices "randomly."

If possible, disconnect all other USB devices, except USB keyboard /
mouse, and just try the printer connected to a USB port. If this
works, you may need to consider adding a "powered" USB hub in order to
boost the power over the USB "cables" and connect "everything" other
USB devices.
