Printer object questions

We are moving the printing from Netware to AD. This is kind of new to
us. I hope someone can help us.

We have two domain environment. Lab and Production. I used Add
Printer Wizard and create all the sharable printer (they are lexmark
printers and all have static ip address). The user can search the
printer (the client os is XP) and add it to their workstation. The
test went very well.

However, I couldn't find any printer object in User and Computer. Do
I have to create them manually?

And do I have to recreate all those printer object in my production
domain? Is there a easy way so I can just simplier copy it over from
my lab domain to production domain. (We have 10 regional sites, ecah
has its own windows server. The lab domain contains only one window
server). The default permission are set to everyone.

And lastly, I would like to assign a group of user as printer
operator. I want them to be able to update/install printer driver,
add/removing print queue and other printer operator functions. Do I
have to give those users remote access (like pcanywhere or xp desktop
remote client) to the server so they can create/update the printer
driver/print queue? And what rights do I have to give them for
maintaining printer object under user and computers util?

Thanks in advance

Hello, You only have to manually add a printer object to AD if they are
connected to a pre-Windows2000 Printer Server. They are else published and
created automatically when they are added to a computer or server in the
domain (By default). How ever the printer objects are child objects of the
particular computer account they are hosted at. Click View in AD Users and
Computers, Click View Users, Groups and Computers as containers and you can
browse child objects of the computer accounts.

Thank you. I can see the printer object.

As regarding copying the printer object from lab domain to production
domain, can someone tell us whether it's possible?

This depends on the member ship of the hosted computer. If you join the
hosted computer (Printer Server) to the production AD. They will be shared
in your production Directory.
