Printer connection in Widows XP

Hank

Got a friend who has changed over from a desktop computer to a
new laptop computer (actually desktop failed). Anyway he had a
multifunction printer from Brothers that only has an LPT port for
connection (large connector). Of course there is no LPT connector on
the laptop. Somewhere he got an adapter to mate the LPT connector to
a USB connector. Called me today saying he can not print.

My question is; Is it possible to put a connector in an LPT port on a
printer then by adapters go to the USB port on a laptop? I would
think it would be totally incompatible.

Adapters do exist.

I would suggest to your friend they would be better off with a newer
porinter, however.
Get one with USB and a network connection. They'll be better off for it in
the long run.

Thank you very much for the prompt information Shenan. I would not
have believe you could just match the connectors and plug it in. One
follow up question: When I look at the control panel, printers and
then properties what port should I see for the connection LPT or USB?
My guess is the USB because that is what laptop is connecting through.

I know there's a serial to usb adapter that works quite well in
connecting my PDA to my newer desktop that doesn't have a serial or
parallel port. But you also need a software driver so that the computer
can understand that you're using a serial input through a USB port.
Don't know if there are similar setups for parallel connectors.

Thanks again for the help with this problem. Must say was surprised
about availability of adapters. However problem turned out to be the
"older" (all of 4 years old) multifunction printer is not compatable
with WindowsXP. Manufacturer will not be undating drivers so solution
is going to have to be replace the printer with new one.

Would be USB..
But if the printer is old enough to be parallel...

I'm curious--what is the brand and model of this printer? Windows XP was out
four years ago.

The person that has the printer is out of town for awhile. When they
get back I will inquire and post it if you want.

Yes, thanks. As I said, I'm curious.
