Printable coloured background for Word Docs

How can I create a printable coloured background on all pages of a large (250
page) Word document? If I convert it to PDF will the coloured background also
convert?

Depends on which version of Word you're using. One way is to
draw a full-page colored rectangle anchored to the header. In
Word 2003, another way is to use the
Format->Background->FillEffects command, but you'll need to check
the "Background colors and images" box in Tools->Options->Print.
