print spooler service not running

I'm having a problem with my print spooler service. The exact message is:
"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not
running." I Googled the message and tried some of the "fixes" to no avail.
Some of them require me to reinstall the drivers to the printers but I can't
do that because the printers are not available. I've gone into Admin Tools
and then Services and tried to restart the spooler but that lasts about two
seconds and then it stops.

I'm using XPSP2 with up-to-date updates.

Thanks for any help.

I fixed my problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers and
not using the Add Printer program. Also uninstalled and reinstalled my
scanner drivers.

Thanks to Byte for his response and to any others who were considering
answering.

Bearman, I had been having very similar problems with my print spooler. Got
into a different group to this one, and got an answer which worked for me.
Go to your C drive > Windows folder > System32 folder > Spool folder >
Printers folder. Open this, and delete the contents. When you've done
this, go to your Control Panel, choose the Administrative Tools folder, and
open the Services (right at the bottom of the list) Scroll down to Print
Spooler, double click to open, and then click on the "start" button. This
fixed the problem for me, and my Brother printer, which was out of action for
over a month while I vainly searched for answers, is now happily churning out
paper on command.
Good Luck
