If you happen to have an old pc lying around that is not used you have
an answer. Plug the printer into the PC and add the machine to the
network. Then share the printer and you do not need to buy anything.

Rather an overkill in terms of electricity consumption if nothing else.
Will the printer not accept an HP JetDirect card..? Alternatively there
are plenty of external print servers out there, I have a couple of Emulex
ones lying around spare but they only have serial and parallel ports, not
USB.

Are you sure it doesn't have a built-in print server already? HP's web
site only shows the LJ 3600 with built-in Ethernet.

One of the vagueries of marketing Warren. In the UK the LJ3600 (USB only) is
available as well as the n and dn versions.

There is an optional Ethernet printserver available for this model and I saw a
picture somewhere which appeared to have a blanking plate at the rear right of
the printer so I suspect it can be added.

Then add it. Thats always the neatest solution.

I bought a CLJ 3600 (no n) in Germany, too.
However it has an ethernet connector, a Realtek network chip and also gets a
(ethernet) link, when plugging it into a switch. However, it does not
respond to any network packages. So I suspect it's just a firmware issue
(for well over 100¤...). I did not have the heart to try flashing a CLJ
3600n firmware onto it sofar...
