Primary IDE reverts to PIO when burning DVD

Strange goings on here. I know how to fix it but why is it happening in
the first place?
Copying a video DVD causes the Primary IDE Channel (HD) to revert to PIO
mode whilst the secondary IDE channel that IS the burner remains at Ultra
DMA Mode 2.
No changes to system except a BIOS update (successful) a few days ago.
BIOS remains unchanged with Block Mode enabled at 16.

If it worked fine before the bios update...
then reflash with the previous bios

Peter,
Check in your BIOS settings to see if you need to enable the DMA for your
drives on the primary channel.. The BIOS update you did may have defaulted to
PIO mode, just change it back to DMA mode.. Do you have a DELL..?

I used Intel Express Bios update not the flash. Not sure how to revert to
previous BIOS.
I'll take a look in there for settings, but the last time I looked
everything was set according to the previous settings.
It's not a Dell but MDG (Canadian) and no proprietary components. I just go
to the various manufacturers' sites for updates.
It may not be the BIOS update at all, but what exactly is causing it is a
mystery.

Follow up:
I couldn't find specific Primary channel settings in BIOS but under IDE
Header "Enhanced" was enabled. The alternative was "Disabled" or "User
defined".
The bios is from AMI I believe even though I got it at Intel. HD is Western
Digital and I've used their utilities on it...passed with flying colours.

I had a similar thing happen about a year ago.........No matter how I tried
I couldnt enable DMA......then some kind sole on the newsgroups told me to
go into Control Panel, System ,Hardware, Device Manager and then click to
expand the DVD/CD-Rom drives and then right click on each and select
DISABLE, then re0boot your PC and windows will detect the New
Hardware......and the DMA settings will be activated.

It worked for me and i've passed it on and it has worked for other people I
know.

Good Luck

it'll only take about 5 mins and should sort you out.

Yes, I usually just uninstall the offending controller and reboot and it's
reinstalled with full DMA values intact.
This time, I'm so fed up with it that I ventured into the registry as per
http://users.bigpond.net.au/ninjaduck/itserviceduck/udma_fix/

Especially that last value "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess" DWORD entry.

I'm wondering if corrupted software might be to blame? I also recently did
a repair install of XP and maybe my burning software is corrupted, although
it works, so probably not that.
The Event viewer only showed some I/O error logs, but that would be my
Diskeeper 10 Pro Software as it uses I/O Smart software.

Pics? I see them on my post, maybe you have them filtered out? Anyway,
thanks for the links. I've used a couple of those on several occasions.
