Hello all,
When I install a program to my user account on a multiple user machine is
there any way to prevent the shortcuts showing on the other users desktops.
I have admin rights the others are limited accounts.

If the program's install process gives you the choice of installing for
all users or just the current user, choose the current user. If you
don't get the choice, then right-click on the Start button and then
left-click on Explore All Users. Move the new program's shortcut icon
to your own Start Menu.

Don't edit the desktop as an administrator.

There's your problem. You should never use an Administrator account for
anything other than working with the machine configuration: The account
you use for day-to-day use should be a normal user, not an administrator.
If you need to change something as Administrator, right click on the object
you want to run as Administrator and click Run As..., or log out and log
back in as Administrator.

Using an Administrator account as your normal login makes your computer less
secure (more ways for an attacker to gain Administrator privileges) and
makes your system more prone to misconfiguration (as you have discovered,
it's easily to accidentally change something that affects the whole system
and other users if you're logged in as Administrator).
