There is alot of reading here, some may be duplicates, so grab a cup of
java(coffee :) . I like this first link the best
NOTE: The Microsoft article listed farther down states that a cpu stepping
of 3 or less is affected, however the link right below states a stepping of 7
or 8 is affected, I perfer to err on the side of caution and will go by the
higher number and see no reason to update my bio's just to install a service
pack I really don't need.

To determine whether your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron
D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 stepping and a BIOS that does not
provide the required production support, follow these steps:

1. Create a startup disk by downloading a startup-disk version of the
Intel Processor Frequency ID Utility. To download this program, visit the
following Intel Web site:

http://support.intel.com/support/processors/tools/frequencyid/sb/CS-007616.htm
2. Start your computer by using the startup disk you created in step 1.
3. On the CPUID Data tab, review the specifications for your computer.
Computers that are affected by this issue have the following specifications:
* CPU Family value of F.
* CPU Model value of 3.
* CPU Stepping value of 3.
* CPU Revision value of 3, 2, 1, or 0.

For more information about this issue, visit the following Intel Web site:

Computer Hangs After Installing SP2

We've heard of a few instances in which readers' computers won't respond
when they restart after installing SP2 and we suspect this might be the
problem: KB article 885626 describes how this can happen if your computer has
a BIOS version that doesn't support your processor correctly.

There is a critical update that you can install prior to installing SP2 to
prevent this from happening. There is a link to the update in the KB article:

See this MS Knowledge Base Article. It has the information you need.
Don't worry how it's titled. It discusses the Prescott issue and gives
references and a patch:

Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the
installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2
