Sp2 or not ?

I am awaitng the delivery of my first pc, a Dell Dimension 1100. It has XP
but as far as I know not SP2.
Looking around the MSN pages there seems to be a problem installing SP2,
when using a Celeron D (prescott stepping) processor.
The suggestions to fix this are a/ Get an updated BIOS from Dell with
product support or b/ Get a critical update patch from MSN (KB 885626)

Can anyone suggest the best route to take, or should I leave well alone and
wait for the release of SP3.. Thank you

If it's a new computer, it ought to. If it doesn't, I'd be very surprised.

If it doesn't have SP2, you need to install it - and you may indeed then
need to follow the steps above. Perhaps even both.

If it does not have SP2 then activate a firewall and then download SP2.

I would be very surprised and disappointed if it did not have SP2. In fact,
if it were me, I would return it and tell them to send me one with SP2. In
today's security world it is a necessity.

Nearly all new PCs with Windows XP installed have already SP2 incorporated. Anyway, SP2 is a very important update and you should install it as soon as possible. Contact Dell if there were some incompatibilities with your hardware/software and SP2 and deploy the update.

The new Dell will come with SP-2 if it is new and you have not bought it
used.

New with a fresh installation is the best time to install a Service Pack if
not already installed.
This is because there is less chance of conflicts with malware and other
programs installed.

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist if not already installed:

Update the BIOS and install SP2 ASAP. As you're just getting it then it may
very well come with SP2 actually.

I have a Dell 8300 (with Prescott) downloading and installing the BIOS
update from Dell was both painless and very easy.

If you are getting it directly from Dell, it will/should have SP2 installed.

It probably already has SP2 on it.
