PPT 2000 Locks Up!

I have PowerPoint 2000 with windows XP.

When I try to insert a mpeg movie I get the error message "Microsoft
PowerPoint for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience." Then PowerPoint closes.

I can insert Windows Media Player using the control toolbox and link the
mpeg movie to it and it works fine. But, I don't want to do it this way.

I also checked my MCI extensions in the registry and it all looks normal.

Does anyone know what's going on here?

Thanks

I just downloaded Moviemaker and converted the .mpg file to a .wmv file and
it does the same thing. It locks up PowerPoint.

I'm not sure which codec was used. Is there a way to find out?

I don't think it is the codec. I've tried about 10 different .mpg files and
none of them work.

I can open the .mpg file with mplay32.exe and mplayer.exe and it works fine.

Thanks

Do you know what codec was used to create the video?

I think that I might try Detect and Repair. Since you can't insert any
video and especially because you are getting that particular message, it
makes me think there is something that has gone haywire with your PowerPoint
installation. Another thing to consider is to make sure that you have all
three of the Service Packs applied to your version of Office 2000.

I've tried detect and repair and I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS
Office 2000 three times. I've installed all the service packs also.

I also recently installed WinDVD. I thought it might have installed a driver
that is conflicting with PPT so I uninstalled WinDVD. Could it have left
something behind that is still conflicting?

Thanks

While it's possible, I don't think so. I've got WinDVD on a couple of the PCs
here and haven't run into any problems like what you're describing.

Very strange. Since the file plays in mplay32.exe, it *should* play in
PPT. And since nothing plays -- the various MPGs and the WMV -- it seems
you're correct that it's probably not a codec issue.

You might check
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm and pay
special attention in section 3. There are screenshots there which you
should use to compare your registry settings to.

The other thing to look at would be the PPT Movie Troubleshooter. This
leads you through some of the more common error messages and
resolutions.
