Powerpoint 2000 and Sony Picture Package - Insert Video Error

After installing Sony Picture Package on my HP Laptop with Window XP Home,
PowerPoint 2000 presents the following error message (then closes) when I try
to insert a newly created Mpeg movie clip into a PowerPoint presentation.
"Microsoft PowerPoint has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience..."

If I uninstall Sony Picture Package, the same movie clip inserts with no
problem and there are no error messages. Is there some way to leave Picture
Package on the laptop and still insert Mpeg Video clips? (I need Sony Picture
Package or something similar to download movies off of a Sony Handycam DVR).
Thanks for the help

Unfortunately I am unable to confirm the type of Mpeg file it is.
"Properties" does not reveal the type. Perhaps you can tell me how to
determine the type of file. Does it make a difference to whether Picture
Package and its software interfers with Powerpoint?

What I believe is happening is that your software is installing an
incompatible codec, or it is changing system settings and file associations
for video. PowerPoint's media player (MCI player) is not very forgiving
when it comes to this. For a full explanation you might want to look at the
tutorial I put together on the subject.
