powerpoint 2003 inserting video files

saved files in mpg format. tried to insert but error message says
....non-standard file or QT is not working properly. Checked QT 6.5 and
message says updated and working ok. Edited film clips and saved in avi and
mov formats still not being read. Yet....all the clips are viewable using
Windows Media Player. Can you change the video "reader" on Powerpoint to
Windows Media Player and that will solve the problem? Please help
me...frustrated and time is running out! Thanks in advance for your
consideration.
