Powerpoint 2003 crashes when playing video

I have Windows XP on a new notebook (Toshiba Portege R100) and have a series
of video clips that I used to play in my earlier Powerpoint presentations. I
installed Office 2003 and now all mpeg video files cause Powerpoint to crash
during the slideshow playback. Files that are video clips rather than mpeg
will play without causing a crash. All files can be played on my computer
using Windows media player. Removing antivirus caused no improvement.
Can you suggest remedies?

I think this might be tied into to SP2, do you have it installed? I have the
same problem, often, also with SP2 it is no longer possible to install video
controls as SP2 treats the Active X controls as hostile, try it -- the media
clip and video controls are now missing from the toolbar, MS says this is by
design. They also suggested that my videos must be corrupt. Can you install
and run .avi files? Of course my response might have nothing to do with your
problem! Have you downloaded and reinstalled the codecs form the media
player website?
I also have the problem in that media player crashes after I have viewed a
video in Powerpoint but the PPT app keeps on running.
