Powering off WIndows

D

Dave Neve

Hello

This might be more a question for a 'mothercard group' but as it is a
configuration in windows, I'm asking here if no one minds

I've just bought a battery backup for my office computer and I'd like to
program it to put windows into a 'deep sleep mode'

But what do I chose for 'power management'

There is an 'always active' button (translated from French so this phrase
may not be exact)

or a

'Office PC' button

I don't really get it cos if there is a power cut, i don't see what 'always
active' can really mean

I'm a bit confused

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

The uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) I've seen allow you to leave the
computer on 24/7 and should there be a loss of power that lasts a certain
amount of time, some UPS software will shut down the machine. Since you
appear to be looking for an UPS that can do something different, I'd suggest
you use google to try to find an UPS with different options. However, I am
not sure having an UPS putting a computer in sleep mode (if such a thing is
possible) would be a wise thing. What happens if the UPS runs out of power
before the electricity is restored? You then have a bad shutdown and take
the chance of losing data.

windows has the feature to program its power depending
on how much is left in the battery.

for example, when the battery reaches 50% of its power,
windows should be able to go into hibernation if you
set it up.

but do not use "standby", because this mode of power
requires a supply of electricity which can't be provided
when the battery goes to 0% power.

How a battery backup system (UPS) is configured depends on how it is
connected to the computer. You will see different options if it is
connected via USB or serial connections. See this document from APC, a
leading manufacturer of UPS systems:
http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/TDOY-5UQVCZ_R2_EN.pdf

It sounds like you have a USB connection, and therefore see something
like Figure 5 on page 6 of the pdf. See if one of the "power schemes"
listed corresponds to the manufacturer of your battery system. If so,
select that.

If not, set the monitor and hard disk shut off times as shown in Figure
5, then go to the "Alarm" tab and configure as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
Finally, don't forget to go to the "Hibernate" tab and ensure that the
"Enable hibernation" box is checked.

"Hibernate" is what you mean by "deep sleep mode."
