Powering down.

Lez Pawl

Going through the normal sequence of powering down using Start, Turn off
Comp etc Windows closes down and the computer shuts off........

Well almost, it goes quiet, but the motherboard remains powered in certain
areas ie USB ports and possibly more if it were detectable. USB peripheral
component lights remaining on.....Bluetooth dongle and WiFi adapter.

I would prefer ALL power to the MoBo to be cut other than physically
switching off the PSU which is a pain as they are almost always way behind
the box.

I have studied the MoBo manual in the region of Power setting but cannot
determine how to TOTALLY disable the MoBo at shut down..........can anyone
assist.

thanks
dj

forgot to add,

I do not have any Hibernation settings running in Windows Power Options all
are set to just Shut Down.

My system has a fairly new FoxConn K8S755A MoBo and Enermax Noisetaker 425w
PSU.

On an ATX based system, the PSU always supplies 5VSB power
so long as the AC power is connected to the PSU. Among
other things, this allows the most basic of functionality,
turning the system on by logic and a switch that doesn't
carry the current used by the system.

Practically all fuller featured modern boards have a jumper
for USB, PS2, or both that allows selection between 5VSB
(meaning those ports are always powered) or 5V, meaning
powered only when rest of system is on.

Often this is a per-physical-port-pair jumper, you might
have several such jumpers for however many port pairs (or
pin headers with USB) the motherboard supports. Consult the
motherboard manual for the location of the jumpers
(typically they're quite close to the physical port or pin
header) and move any or all as desired to the 5V position.

If you have a really poor motherboard manual then a strong
light and good eyes will probably find these pin headers
labeled, they're typically a single row of three pins and
you merely move the jumper from middle and one end to middle
and the other end.

I suppose it is possible that bios logic (user settings)
could control the power rail used instead of jumpers, but
that is uncommon enough that I can't recall any boards that
do so.

Older motherboards offer headers (USBPWxx three pin, KEYBD three pin) that
allow setting the power source either at +5V or +5VSB. The +5VSB is what is
still running after shutdown. You can check your motherboard manual for such
headers.

More recent motherboards save the pennies on the header pins, and remove them.
The power choice is permanently +5VSB, meaning the mouse LED may remain lit
after Windows shutdown.

But reconfiguring is an illusion. If you have an older motherboard, then yes,
you may end up changing the USB power source. But the motherboard itself
could still be using +5VSB @ 1A, and the power supply itself might be 50%
efficient making that power. So the only way to stop all waste, is to
switch off at the back.

Using a good quality power strip is one way to do it. That will bring the
switch within convenient reach. While I don't use one on my PC, I keep my
router on a separate switched strip, and can switch it off when not in use.
I had to do that, as the unit doesn't have its own switch. The power strip
costs almost as much as the router :)

Pointless obsessing about such a low idle power use.
other than physically switching off the PSU which is a pain as they are almost always way behind

Then switch the power on the mains side of the power cord, stupid.

There are very few motherboards that allow you to turn it off TOTALLY.

thanks for the replies and my reasons for doing this were not really cost
saving as I know the hot parts are drawing very little power. It was purely
that the comp does load up windows cleaner with a cold mobo
boot................don't ask me why but it does.

Makes a lot more sense to fix that detail instead.
