PowerColor Radeon 9700 Pro

fook me

I have just bought this card as an upgrade to a nvidia mx 440.

I know ATI no longer make them but I know they are good cards. What is
support like from ATI for cards recently removed from their flavour of the
month list?

Also, does anyone have experience of the 9700 pro and how do you rate them
please?

Thanks in anticipation of any replies.

I have had one for about 5 months and am well happy with it using the
3.7 Catalyst drivers. It still performs very favourably compared to
the top end ATI and NVidia cards.

Until now we had a Radeon 8500, which ATI had no problems responding to our
support query recently.

Ok guys,

I have just got myself a powercolor 9700 pro.

It has ATI stickers all over it and samsung memory.

How do I tell what type of memory (i.e how fast cus I here there is some
2.0n stuff out there) and how overclockable it is?????

I have read before about looking at type of chips etc to see?????

Or do I have to install it first and just try.

By the way - it is just stock cooler and nothing new!

I would like to learn how to add non-stock cooling though so I can safely
o/c although I here it can be o/c'd quite safely with stock cooling

What, another one since your post yesterday?

You have got a 9700 Pro as a replacement to a MX440 and before you
have even tried it you want to overclock it???

lol. No same one - my first post was when I ordered the thing, this post was
now I have received it.

I'm just asking the questions andrew.

i'm keen and eager.

Yeah, I know I need to concentrate on getting it stable with my system first
before even thinking about clocking.

Also, what mobo would people recommend for it. I have a P4 2.0Ghz Northwood
with ddr2700 512MB.

My current board runs at max 4x agp, and therefore I want to upgrade.

The board needs to have onboard lan and sound.

Regards

Jim

guys,

What are your recommendations for installing this card and removing my old
mx440 - I really dont want to have to format?

any third party apps that fully uninstall nvidia drivers?

Detonator Destroyer works.

Installation tips:

Download the latest Cat 3.10 drivers and control panel. Don't worry about
any older drivers on your installation CD, but you'll need it for
veification when or if you install MMC.

Uninstall everything relating to Nvidia, shut down and swap cards. When you
reboot, Windows will detect the new hardware and offer to install the
drivers for you. Just say no. Cancel back to the desktop, and run the ATI
installation applets, drivers first, the control panel.

Reboot again, and you'll see a help screen to walk you through the necessary
settings and adjustments.

As for your mobo question, like the previous reply said, you'd never be able
to tell the difference between 4X and 8X. No need to upgrade just to
accomodate the vid card.

When it comes to overclocking, make sure you're stable at stock speeds
first, then go up gradually using any of the several free tweaking
utilities. The tweaking forum at www.rage3d.com is the best source of info
on how and how far to push it.

Thanks Skid,

this I will do.

When you say detonator destroyer - where would I get this from? I didnt
realise nvidia drivers were called detonator - I always downloaded from
nvidia websites you see and they dont have these flash names.

There is no point upgrading just for AGP 8X, you won't notice the
difference.
